The Deceived Matchmaker

A reader, David, reflects calmly and candidly on why things are not working out between Aoun and Hariri…

Hopefully Saad Hariri will read GMA’s statement regarding the 1-Year anniversary of Rafic Hariri’s assasination, and take a moment to reflect on why things are the way they are between the FPM and the FM, and wonder whether or not they had to end up this way. Look how much things have changed from 12 months ago!

It seems as if it was just last week that the assasination occured and most Lebanese were united more than they ever have been since the time of the French mandate occupation. One year later, and it is almost as if March 14th never occured!!

I am personally distraught at all of this, because I can just imagine Bashar and the gang loving every minute of Lebanese disunity. They always tried to show that the Lebanese were so un-united that they could never agree and rule themselves.
We have proven them wrong in many ways, but in others, we sure have a long way to go.

Things between the FPM and the FM didn’t have to end up the way they did, the only problem is trying to figure out why things ended up this way. I still remember one year ago how we all thought that the FPM and FM had many things in common, starting with the fact that the FM was supposedly the most “secular” in outlook compared to all the other major Lebanese political groups, and I still remember many FMers praising the FPM for being among the first to hit the streets, to the point where they were even saying that they were learning from the FPM about how to be as organized and efficient as us!
SO what the heck happened?!?

Was it Walid Jumblat that was responsible for the schism between the FPM and the FM, because he heard GMA talk about an audit, and then freaked out that his history would be revealed?

Or was it the Qornet Shehwan gathering, that feared for their seats, now that the FPM was going to enter the electoral race?

Or was it some of the advisors of Saad Hariri, that didn’t like GMA and the FPM for a number of various reasons, and figured that if their “plan” was put into action, the FPM would be crushed during election time? Or did they also fear our electoral weight? Or did they get greedy and want the whole pot?

All I know, is that the FM turned around, did some things that were not that “nice” to the FPM, and their media went on the rampage against us.
It is still sad to see this situation, knowing that we have a country to build, hopefully together, and knowing that we still have enemies out their that want to harm Lebanon.

IT’s a shame to see things have turned out this way, for whatever reason, because I believe that things should have ended up that the FPM would be participating en masse on Feb. 14th.

Now the question is, can things be changed, before their is too much animosity between the two sides? Ya FM wake up before it is too late!

  1. Nothing should change, until the FPM, and the Rambo leader that’s heading it, decides to come back to what it’s orginial fight was, that is freeing Lebanon from the Syrians and seeing all militias dissolved!

Instead, Aoun is so obsessed with the presidency that he is willing to sell his soul, the soul of his party, by getting in bed with Syrians and the Hezballah.

I think the best option we have now is to offer Aoun the title of “His majesty, ruler of the kingdom of his villa in Rabieh”, then maybe he will finally be satisfied, and will let the country go back to its normal runnings.

But in my opinion, I hope Aoun continues to play this dumb game, since he is only hurting himself. Indeed everytime he opens his mouth, or signs some document he loses a few disillusioned members of his party! I have seen it all around me, and I am glad that not all of his followers have been hit with amnesia or brainwashing!

    Cheers

  2. You list several reasons why things turned out this way between the FPM and the FM! All of which place the blame on the FM.

Did it ever occur to you that the FPM and more specifically MA is responsible for the situation today?

Please don’t pass off your post as a genuine reflection into what went wrong! You are clearly biased and will refuse to even suggest that Aoun may have played a big part for the current situation in Lebanon.

I only wish for one thing : Aoun’s return to Paris.

  4. David,

    You’re in a denial phase.
You just cannot admit to yourself that the man who used to be your hero is now, not only, ruining his own reputation, but also taking his blind followers to the unknown.

Many FPM supporters were disullisioned and faced it. Here’s an example of a guy who wrote the following in L’Orient-Le Jour (January 31, 2006):

    Camille MOURANI

Now if GMA is following his own interests, the FPM’s natural place last tuesday was among all the Lebanese in Martyrs’ Square.
It is unfortunate that he keeps on acting for his personal objectives.
But it’s even more unfortunate to be in denial, like you are, and try to find any possible argument to defend him.

David, do you remember how we fought as FPM, LF and independent students to restore our country’s independence?
Do you recall how we would dream to have all the Lebanese people, and let me be more explicit, to have the Muslims by our side, sharing our claims?
Today, we have Muslim leaders who are saying wherever they go: Lebanon first!

Now that was our dream and we’re realising it. That’s why all of us patriotic Lebanese had to be there on Tuesday. That’s why the FPM had to be organizing the event! That’s were they truly belong. Instead, they were “punished” because of Aoun’s “strategic” choices.

  5. The FM wish to rule the whole country. They want everything: the Parliament, the Presidency, the post of Prime Minister. There is no doubt Saad Hariri wants to help Lebanon out, but let him remember that him and his sidekicks are not alone in this country!

Also, they shouldn’t get too confident with the Lebanese Forces by their side, who don’t represent much.

It was the FM that closed the door shut on the FPM, believe it or not.

  6. David

Jounblat has said yesterday that March 14 should start working on getting GMA back. He mentioned that as a priority. Its in Al-Nahar.

  7. Dear David,

Some people here are blinded by hate, some people in Lebanon are blinded by hate!.

I was full of hope of an agreement between FM and FPM because I also considered that they have a lot in common.

On the 14th of February I was ashamed of being Lebanese, but so proud of being an FPM’er. It is a real shame to see the son of Rafic Hariri qualify WJ and even more Samir Geagea of heroes.

General Michel Aoun or “Rambo”as someone has said, is a Hero and will always remain a Hero.

You might want to change that, You might want to hate him, You might want to break ur tv sets when U see him, U can do all that, however, the truth will remain:Michel Aoun stood when no man was standing, Michel Aoun has never changed any of his stances, Michel Aoun is a national Hero, and because U r Lebanese he is YOUR hero whether U like it or not!

Why am I an FPM’er and why was it FM that strayed and not FPM???

FTV and newspaper have been biased towards GMA and FPM, everything is being done to get them out of the way, along with FPM.

FM has given promises and not abided by them.

FM has played the game of the 2000 electoral law along with its partners

FM has very wisely kept FPM out of the government

FM is doing everything in its power to prevent General Aoun of becoming the new President for NO reason except to have a puppet they can manipulate

FM has deceived me deeply, this is not the legacy of Rafic Hariri R.I.P!!!

    Why am I an FPM’er?

I am an FPM’er because I believe in FPM’s chart, I am an FPM’er because I have free will, I am an FPM’er because I do not follow individuals blindly, because I might now criticize GMA but will not deny his history, GMA is a national hero who might make mistakes in the future, until now I have criticized him once and it was when the amnesty Law was passed as a deal of the “majority” with SG, and I have told everyone about my point of view, and no one told me not to!!!

If you want to know what FPM is, You have to live FPM, we do not have crosses stained by martyrs blood, we do not have battles of 2 flags, we do not have sectarianism, we do not have hate, what we have is hope and faith.

Before you EVER talk about FPM, go read the chart, go analyse the actions, go while thinking in one orientation”the interest of Lebanon”.

I, a Christian FPM’er am proud that My Fellow FPM’ers are from all religions, ALL, I am proud that I can talk to them all the same way, I am proud that we are all looking in the same direction, I am proud to have a leader who does not have one sectarian bone in his body, I am proud to have a leader who is dealing with Hizbullah when the government should have, who is risking extremist Christians support for the sake of Lebanon.

Before U criticize think well, is Hizbullah capable of giving GMA the presidency????

Stop ur blind hatred, it is pathetic.

Go work on ur medias:”typing errors” are too common these days!!

Instead of saying Cheers FPM+GMA u have done what was un-doable, thank U GMA for making this understanding with Hizbullah whom many of you have qualified of resistance for years and years!!

Give us the better option!!U want to disarm Hizbullah??U had heroes on the 14th giving heroic speeches??U want Hizbullah to be the ennemy??OK so let’s all get armed and let’s have a civil war again!!!

Hizbullah represents a major part of the Lebanese society, if U want to deny that, we will no longer have a Lebanon a country for all Lebanese, we will have Lebanon a country for the 14th of march coalition!!Is that what u want??

Reflect again!!!I urge U FM’ers first of all to realize what u r doing, U r allying with extremists v/s moderate!!!

Finally, The picture done of GMA on this website is very well done,BRAVO let’s clap for the artist!! but if it does anything ..it is to show ur true face, and it’s not such a pretty face I am seeing when an agreement between a Christian figure and a Muslim figure for the sake of Lebanon turns out as a joke to you!!!

FPM the secular party might very well loose a lot of the Christian extremists support and that is a fact! Now, let me give U the reasons:

Extremists want a Christian leader and GMA has decided to be a national leader, he has taken the stance of being Lebanese!!

He has done everything that might keep him away from the presidency for the sake of Lebanon…

Just review his stances, he decided to be in the opposition, he goes for an agreement with Hizb to start dialogue, is this getting him closer to the presidency????

I am a proud FPM’er, so called FPM’ers who are ashamed of an agreement with other Lebanese, who want to wage stupid wars in “national Hayssa” can very well go choose another party!!

    I am a proud FPM’er, but U who R reading..are U so proud now of who U r???

  9. The FM is a political party, and as such its naturale role is to govern the country. Just like FPM’ers dream of an “orangification” other parties naturally work towards “controlling” everything, whether it is presidency, PM-ship, or the parliament. The people criticizing Saad Hariri for apparently doing that are either very politically naive (in this case they should see how things work in France or the US, for example you can verify if Bush appoints democrats in key posts), or they might be simply sectarian who do not like seeing a “sunni” ruling the country. From my knowledge of the lebanese, I think the latter is the most probable scenario. And they call themselves “zegular”, what a shame…

btw nice post David. Typical holier-than-thou I never do mistakes aouni speach.

  10. I totally agree with all what “secular fpm’er” wrote, and i want to add this.
Saad 7ariri chose to join hands, with two criminal bloodsuckers, who slaughtered manny innocent lebanese, and want to show that they’re saints now.
If anyone profited from the Syrian regime,it’s Jumblat who always had a verry good relation with those syrians, always had ministers, and parliement representatives, stole, killed under syrian protection ………
