Two previous posts by The Beirut Spring deserve follow-ups:
1-In “How To Squeeze A Regime”, I mentioned that Syria is being pressured from the east, south and west. Today, the North, Turkey, has joined the fray to try to convince the Syrian President to cooperate with Inspector Mehlis.
2-In “The Aoun Challenge”, I had suggested that Gebran Bassil take Almustaqbal columnist Nasseer el Ass’ad to court and this is precisely what will apparently happen.
Also in the same post, the debate concluded that Ass’ad shouldn’t criticize Aoun and Ignore Hezbollah. As if Ass’ad had read the posts, he wrote a scathing criticism of Hezbollah today.
Let’s hope tomorrow i can also say: “I told you so” regarding Tishreen’s worthless threats.
Hello, my name is Mustapha and I blog in The Beirut Spring about Lebanese society and politics. I started in February 2005 after the killing of P.M. Rafik Hariri.

You can. FPM has declared it will not partake in any demo. Supposedly, according to Naharnet, Amal and HA declared the same (though that remains to be seen). That leaves the SSNP, the Baath, and the Ahbash. Not quite what they were hoping for.
And if Naseer wants to talk about people going to Syria for meetings, he should talk about Nasrallah’s visit to Damascus to meet with Iranian FM Mottaki.
A propos what I said (in the post below) about HA being at once in (to coopt) and above government, I found this quote from the piece linked above quite telling: “Regionally, the issues are not categorized within the local disagreement between Hizbullah and the government.”
Did you get that? Regionally, the HA couldn’t give two shits about the government and the opinion of the Lebanese people! When it comes to regional matters, it ceases to be an issue of discussion, agreement or disagreement, with the government! It then becomes time for Sayyed Hassan Abdel Nasser, who is above these things. Yet at the same time, they stay in government, take its PM to task in order to get him to say that he is against UNR 1559!
Don’t you just love their conception of government?! It’s so, as that colossal moron Helena Cobban put it, “democratic.” I mean seriously, is there anyone dumber than Cobban on HA? Maybe Amal Saad-Ghorayeb.
BTW. both Seniora (from Bahrain) and MP Abi Naser have made public statements about the Tishreen thing being direct interference in Lebanese affairs, and that Syrian should never again interfere in Lebanese affairs. I think that was the first time in a long time that these words were uttered by MPs and a PM. Kudos.
Whoever answers the call to demonstrate will be considered a traitor of the worst kind (if there are indeed various levels of being a traitor). Even those that hate Senouira and his government know that answering the SYRIAN call to go against Senouira means that they might as well all move to Syria, since that is where their patriotism would lie.
I agree with those who think that Thursday will turn out to be a dud but what is crucially important is not the fact that HA, Amal, Aounists etc might not take to the street but whether their decision is based on a firm belief that taking orders from a forign regime is traitorous or whether they have withheld their participation only when it appeared that their compatriots have shamed them into such a position. If it is the latter, and I believe that it is, then HA Aounists, Amal Baathists etc are only bidding their time . The only logical conclusion is that HA and Amal must be asked to withdraw from the cabinet.
I’m at school at the moment and I don’t have enough time to write a nice long comment.
However I couldn’t agree more with Ramzi and Khaled, in fact I liked what Ramzi wrote so much, that I felt compelled to write this comment and show he is not the only person holding these views.
I’m not going to start bashing Aoun even though he deserves it, but facts are facts. 1- He lied about the meeting with Lahoud 2-In the last election, he made deals with every damn pro-syrian and every corrupt politician. These are undeniable facts, I’ll leave you to interpret them.
Anyway:
NASSIB LAHOUD FOR PRESIDENT he’s the man for the job !; if you agree post a comment saying so please.
I never liked Syria but I also realize that we eventually should not be enemies and respect each others just because practically we will need each others (Lebanon and Syria). My questions are:
- Does anyone really believe that Aoun takes his orders from Syria or their allies ?
- Does anyone believe that Aoun will put Syria’s interest above Lebanon’s interest ?
- So what if he met with Syrians and their allies. Why does he have to hide it !! Didn’t Arafat meet with Sharon, didn’t the Americans meet with the North Koreans … I can find endless examples. Aoun will meet with Lahoud. He is not hiding it but it will be according to his terms and he has no reason to hide it. He is also not hiding the he wants to be president. Why should he ?
And if everyone is using secterianism to acheive their goal, why should he lose by not using it (even though he is against it and will try to remove it when he has the power to).
Finally, I don’t think Aoun should be a president because he is crazy by not compromising (and this could be dangerous in a place like Lebanon) but not because he does not deserve it. He has every right to ask for it.

Can you tell something about stock exchange? :)
Yes Nassib Lahoud would make a good candidate for the presidency. Geagea is a divisive figure, Aoun is too rigid and Chibli is not the guy for the job.
Yep… Agree Nassib Lahoud for president… with the new and improved Geagea a close second.
“…As if Ass’ad had read the posts, he wrote a scathing criticism of Hezbollah today…”
Mr. Mousse: as always your modesty honors you.
To use our beloved el Presidente’s famous phrase you’re kind of “misunderestimating your influence out there” in the Greater Middle-East and North African Spring Sprung and beyond!
Long live the one-man Tripolitan think-tank of Iffreeqiyah!
Eternally yours in Truth and Liberty,
Dr Vic
PS Yeah I agree with faux sheikh Sa’âd and his truth-seeking friends of Al-Haqeeqâh Inc.: Nasseeb Le-hood for Presidente supremo of the Lebanonistan Banana pudding republic, and the fez-wearing buffoon for minister of applied cunnilingustics…
