Saad’s UN Meetings
Saad Hariri’s meetings with international heavyweights has produced a big relief to a lot of Lebanese. What’s the significance of these meetings?
When Hariri the father was killed back in that black day in February, one of the immediate responses from a lot of Lebanese was a selfish one: With the death of Rafik Hariri, a man famous for his international contacts, Lebanon has lost the ears of the major world players. To these people, the sight of Saad Hariri rubbing shoulders with world leaders was gripping.
Mr. Hariri met a lot of leaders, but a careful look at whom he met reveals a great deal about Lebanon’s future strategic direction.
Hariri met with the Jordanian king, the Iraqi President, the Pakistani president and both the Turkish P.M and Foreign Minister (pictured).
Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Pakistan are what we can call American and European Ideological Moslem Allies. I.e. Moslem countries that are led by secular, modernizing, reformist and ‘pro-western’ leaders. They together form a sort of ‘Axis’ of counter-terrorism in the European sense of the term (long term). Lebanon and Iraq are not quite there yet, but they are encouraged and cajoled to join the club. This is the context in which Saad’s meetings should be seen.
Compare that with President Lahhoud’s meeting with the Iranian President and you get the full picture about the options that lie ahead for Lebanon.
The other very important meeting (in addition to his meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Russia and The US) is the one Mr. Hariri had with Mr. Dominique De Villepin, the French (increasingly popular) Prime Minister. The Significance of this encounter is that it has the potential of replacing the famous Hariri-Chriac “friendship”. Mr. De Villepin, a youngish chap, is Chirac’s favorite successor for the French Presidency, and if the trend in France continues, he can even beat Mr. Sarcozi and actually become the French President in 2007.
A final word of caution Mr. Hariri: Your dad used a combination of luck, power and charm to maintain these contacts. Honestly, I think you’re lacking a bit in the charm department. I would advise you work on that, after all, your friends are our friends.

Saad has major financial investments in Amman. He’s building the Jordanian capital a city center. And I believe it will even sport the same name as the one in downtown Beirut, SOLIDERE.
Construction begins shortly. Just recently they tore down the former mukhabarat headquarters, where the new downtown will sit.
Musharraf and Shaheed Rafiq had very close relations. Perhaps some financial deals there, as well.
You make a good point about a modern-Baghdad Pact (pretty much the same players as last time, minus Iran).
However, in Lebanon government and private interest always overlap. Let’s not forget the cold shoulder Karami received when he made his visit to Arab capitals.
Interestingly enough, Iraq’s President Talbani actually said on TV that Saad and his “rifaq” are Iraq’s allies. And more interesting is the fact that Iran’s President met with Lahoud and not with Saad, which means something. Don’t you think?….Hizbullah is perhaps one of the main groups that are backing Lahoud and his regime.
I have to say, I was quite annoyed with Saad meeting with the heavyweights, because in the end, he is JUST a minister. His father’s death, and god bless his father, does not give him him the right to bounce from leader to leader. If anything, it should have been Seniora.
But this is a typical Lebanese tragedy.
Hariri’s axis of counter-terrorism or Hezbollah’s axis of… counter-counter-terrorism. Not a complicated choice.
Lazarus, I find Hariri’s meetings unconventional for sure, but is it his fault they want to meet with him? Is he supposed to refuse?
Note: he is not a minister, he is an MP and head of a parliamentary block.
I dont know why you are taking Hariri’s in a negative way, Many of the observers jump into the conclusion that MP Saad is going to New York to increase the “3ezle” of Lahoud there, well to shock those observers that is NOT TRUE.
MP Saad’s visit to New York is a preventive measure to absorb any negativities on Lebanon the visit of Lahoud in New York might generate.
His visit was also to preserve the international connections His father did, and to many he did a godo job.
MP Saad’s meetings in New York were like reviving trust of the international community in Lebanon and is in no way directed towards Lahoud or towards increasing the international 3ezle on Him..
All the above was confirmed by Darel Issa who congratulated Hariri on his visit and on its outcomes

The story may well be one of AAK’s lies (what a stupid F*), but I found it rather nice.

Stop spreading lies about Hariri and Arabisim.
Hariri was with the term I like to call Neo-Arabisim (maybe I invented it I dont know) and that is related to business and in the arabs working together to controll and form a strong Arab market so that all the Arab countries benifit from it.. That is the Arabisim of Rafik Hariri.
i.e. he suggested that for example Lebanon produces all the medication for the Arab countries, Egpyt produces all the Cars, etc, etc.. (PS these are examples) and hence each country’s economy becomes stronger.
I am with such Neo-Arabisim.. As it makes the economy of each country stronger as it opens markets to the industy, and instead of being ristricted to one country, the market will be all the Arabs.. (This arabisim is NOT naser’s Arabisim and it does NOT include integration of the so called Arab state)

Khaled, i did not say, and neither did the people before you commented, that Harir was going to increase the 3ezle of lahoud.
But I wonder … do you really honestly believe that Hariri’s visit was to prevent the negative impacts of Lahoud’s visit. If so, please explain. I would like to share your view. I really would.
And I have no problem with hariri meeting with heads of states, in the same way they have met with jumblatt and aoun in the past. What do I have a problem is him going to the general assembly of the UN … it doesn’t matter what type of arabism he is a protagonist of, what does matter is to have some semblance of governmental structure.
Oh well … I’ll just let it be. We still have our zuama, and we still have the zuama’s followers, so all might actually end well …

Furthermore, I am not the only one who said what I posted before. Daryll Issa (a Lebanese descendent US Senator) Said that too.
By Lahoud going alone to the UN, that would have showed that the international committee are boycotting Lebanon, and maybe we would have been unjustifiably labeled as Axis of Evil.
Second, whoever goes there and imporves the links of Lebanon is welcome, be it Hariri, Aoun, or Nasra Alla.
Third: Igonring point one above, wouldnt you agree that it a good idea to go to one place where all the leaders he intends to meet are? isnt this better than flying from one country to another, and taking months to complete a task that was done in dew days?

I am just going to discuss point 2, because in general I won’t disagree with point 3, and I don’t usually listen to compliments politicians give to each other, as in point 1.
I find it slightly odd that quite a group of lebanese politicians have been meeting in Paris, with other world leaders, under the guise of “threats” … what really topped it off is the 24 hr. trip Feltman took to Paris. I am not going to conjecture what they discussed, but I really do wonder if Hariri’s trip is only about improving the links. If that was what it was about, then why Hariri. Why not only Seniora? He should be more represantative, no?
On the other hand, I might not be giving Hariri the benifit of the doubt. I just haven’t seen do anything “good” yet, and am not going to trust him just because he is his father’s son.

According to Jumblat and to many news reports what was discussed in Paris with Saad hariri are the points he already raised in the UN with the international leaders he met.
Isnt this great? i.e. seeing all these Lebanese politicians (whom are allies) discuss on how to avoid international pressure on Lebanon. Discussing with hariri on how to deliver the message? This shows that he is not working on his own.. True the presidential issue was discussed there with no agreement reached between Saad and Jumblat, but the important part was already done.
Did you notice how after the Paris meetings the international community changed its insistence on the full implimentation of 1559?
Those meetings were great as it stopepd all the consequences of 1559. Please check a blog i made on the 1559 not being an international priority any more, and today that was confirmed by many news reports…

Well this neo-Arabism looks like what ‘radical isolationists’ always advocated! Strong relations based on equality, not on hierarchy!
I don’t have a fundamental problem with a neo-arabism (though I might disagree with it on some issues) if it’s democratic and peaceful!
But the Arab world needs a new generation of ideologues to replace Husri, Aflaq and their alikes!
And when I say that the Arab wordl needs new ideologists, I mean that they need them now! Or else Qutb, Ben Laden or Qardawi will fill the vacuum.

Saad Hariri is just a puppet. He is told what to say and what to do. The guy is a total airhead. he wakes up every day at noon and doesn’t get to work before 4pm. He lacks hsi father’s intelligence and charisma. the only thing he has going for him is his money and the death of his father.
